Search for AR Books

Click on the link above.  The easiest way to search is to enter the low and high limits of your child's reading range in the ATOS book level area.  You will also need to enter an Interest level.  Then click GO.

WVE has AR program in which students have access to 100,000+ quiz titles.  The best way to view the list of available titles on your child's level is to look online or ask your child's teacher for assistance.

What is AR?

It is crucial to children's reading development that they have many opportunities to read and that they read books which are developmentally appropriate.  In other words, they need to spend most of their time reading books that are "just right" for them, not too easy or too difficult.

One way we try to ensure that our students are getting the right reading practice is through Accelerated Reader or AR.  Students take the STAR reading test at the beginning, middle, and end of each year to give us an approximate reading range (ZPD) for their independent reading levels.  Once they know their ZPD, they choose AR books to read that are in their range, read them, and take quizzes on the computer.

This is just a way of monitoring the independent reading that would be expected anyway.

These quizzes are anywhere from 5-20 questions long.  Students need to score at least 60% on a quiz to "pass" it.  (Longer, 20 question quizzes require 70% for passage.) Only passing scores earn points.  Each AR book is assigned a point value.  Students who earn 100% on the quiz earn the full point value.  Students who score between 60-95% earn partial points.

We have found AR to be a great way to motivate our students to read and monitor their book selections and comprehension.

If you have any questions about AR, please visit our school website or contact me.

How does AR work in our classroom?

In 4th grade, our students are expected to read regularly.  They are given time to read independently each day and are expected to read at home for about 20 minutes each night.

Each quarter, students are assigned an AR goal.  This is a number of points they are expected to  earn by reading AR books and taking quizzes to demonstrate their understanding.  Each student's goal is based upon his/her ability and reading range, and may change during the year.  Students are also expected to maintain an average of at least 85% correct on their AR quizzes.

Two grades will be taken from AR each quarter:

Percent of goal earned

Average percent correct

Together these scores will count for one-third of the reading grade for the quarter.  All of the students have the same opportunity to be successful and improve their reading skills with this program.  To be successful, however, it will be important that students read regularly and carefully.  Students who begin their reading for the quarter at the beginning of the quarter usually do best.

Where can I find AR books?

AR books can be found in our classroom library, school library, book stores, book orders, or anywhere you find books.  The trick is to know which books have AR quizzes available at WVE and how they are leveled.

AR books in our classroom and school libraries will have AR stickers in the spine.  They list the reading level and point value on the inside cover.  To find a book in these or other locations, it will help to consult the AR quiz list online.  (AR books at the public library will not have stickers.)

Because our students have access to over 100,000 AR quizzes, it's not practical to have a printed list of titles.  A great way to find books is to use the AR Bookfinder website.   While there, you can search by title, author, or reading level.  To search by reading level, click on the Advanced Search link, and enter the low and high ends of your child's ZPD in the Book Level boxes.  You will also need to select an interest level (4th graders will usually be lower grades or middle grades).

How Can I Monitor My Child's AR Progress?

You can access your child's AR progress at anytime by clicking the link below and going to Renaissance Place Home Connect.  Simply use the same username and password your child uses to take quizzes at school to access the account. You can even have emails sent to you each time your child takes an AR quiz.  Of course, you can contact me for AR info. at any time.
